08/06/2008, 10:59 | Design SojournI am a Lamy Dialog 1 by Richard Sapper!
This beautiful ball point pen was designed and launched in 2003 by Richard Sapper who is also known for the IBM Thinkpads and the iconic Alessi Melodic kettle. In 1959, Richard Sapper together with Marco Zanuso was hired as consultants to Brionvega. Their resulting series of radios and televisions ushered in an aesthetic known as techno-functionalism. This limited edition pen has a Matt titanium triangular body and a stainless steel clip. I relate to this product as it does reflect my style or the sort of style I would aspire towards. This style would be clean, functional but still edgy. What I also like is that the Dialog 1 is able to differentiate itself from most pens, but still have a pen like typology, an association that is very important in my mind. Furthermore, not only does the Dialog 1 function well, it is simply a joyful experience to use. I finally managed to get mine on Sale at 40% off in, or all places, Thailand! ---------- What about you? Which product do you most relate to or associate yourself with? I look forward to your replies!Meta Design Links: 08 Aug 2008

Cool Modern Homes from Bark Design
00/00/0000, 00:00 | FUTURE HOUSE NOWDoris is the work of Bark Design, a firm with a modern bent that FHN reader Mike was kind enough to point out (thanks again, Mike!). Doris is swell gal, with lots of attractive features. In particular, I adore her flat roof, her expansive banks of windows - and she's got a carport! Oh, I really like carports.

Doris also has a wonderful floor plan with possibly the greatest kitchen in the world - made so by the overhead door out to the patio. It incorporates a screen that can be rolled down when the door is up to keep bugs out while letting breezes flow. Perfecto! My wife would love that.

Doris has a brother, Boris, and a good friend in Leroy G. Cooper.

Here are a few pics Bark shared with me of the Burbank, another model that isn't shown on their site yet. I really like the window placement on this house - it looks like it has pretty good solar orientation.

I must say, I find a whole lot to like aesthetically about Bark's homes. There's definitely a signature style with the flat roofs, carports, window arrangements and the way outdoor living spaces are approached. But what I like most is their attitude and approach to bringing modern homes to the market. I e-mailed Bark, and was very impressed with what they had to say about their direction.
"We are a team consisting of a developer, architect, and
contractor who were getting frustrated by the dismissive response to
modern design by clients and real estate professionals in our area,
so we decided to do our own thing with incredibly positive results.
We couldn't understand why people would seek out the latest design
and technology in cars, electronics, etc., but new builder/spec. home
construction seemed to be stuck in the year 1900. How many people
would go to a store for a new computer and happily walk out with a
univac the size of a refrigerator that only did addition and
subtraction? Yet people were making a similar decision every day with
a new home. We just didn't get it.
So, we design and build homes that respond and complement modern
life, are extremely efficient in terms of energy, space, livability,
constructability, and are affordable."
I've had exactly those same thoughts for a long time. I like what Bark is doing, and they must be hitting the mark - they have seven projects "on the board" for 2008!
Very exciting!

bun-snatching coca-cola bottle design

the cheng chau bun festival is a traditional chinese festival held on the island on cheung chau in hong kong.
the festival's highlight is the bun-snatching competition, where participants climb a giant bamboo tower covered
in chinese steamed buns. the higher the bun snatched, the better the luck that will be brought to the snatcher's
family. hong kong designers iris luk tsz-yan and kelvin kung tin-wing recently won a coca-cola design
competition with a bun-snatching influenced idea, in the distinct coca-cola bottle shape. their winning design
will be built and displayed at the upcoming olympic games in beijing. a unique festival and interesting modern
interpretation.

Boutique Nostalgia
07/28/2008, 14:09 | Design*SpongeWhen I was a little girl my mother worked in a sewing studio called Cody’s Couture in Georgetown (D.C.), which is where I spent a significant amount of my preschool years. The owner of the studio was a Frenchwoman named Solange Cody who loved me to death. Every time I was there I would join her on her errand-runs, which involved walking around Georgetown picking up lunch, buying flowers, and window-shopping at all the little boutiques. Hanging out with her allowed me to absorb everything in this trendy neighborhood within Washington, D.C. I remember loving all the clothes, the fashion, and window displays ? even then I appreciated the treasures in these little spaces. It’s truly amazing what stays with you because today I love doing the same thing. No matter what city I live in I ha ve to explore the boutiques. I don’t need to buy anything, because for me there is something very nostalgic and wonderful about just visiting and admiring the unique flavor in each of them. Blogging for Fly gives me more opportunities to do so and an excuse to take pictures so I can share these inspiring spaces with others.
Here are some pictures from some recent boutique visits in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.

00/00/0000, 00:00 | FUTURE HOUSE NOWFinally, I saw something that sparked a little daydreaming again, which is really what I'm after. It's "House t" by Akihisa Hirata Architecture Office (HAO) of Tokyo, Japan. Of course, it's Japanese. Is there any place in the world that produces more unique, original, thought provoking houses than Japan? NO WAY!

The approach to a second story and the division of spaces in the home is totally different. I get lost just looking at the roof line and the placement of the windows. It's bright, clean and sculptural in a way that only Japanese houses are.

Hello and big ups to those of you who have followed along to my rambling this week. Thanks Grace for the opportunity — i love how D*S has created a network of people who make things, arrange things, recover things, collect things, etc. Sometimes I refer to my “internet friends,” and I’ve made many of them through this site and links from this site. I also have realized that I should use the phrase “internet friends” sparingly.
One last thing I’ll leave you with:

Casey Rubber Stamps. Its a shop in the East Village run by a man named Jon Casey. Finding him a few years back was a windfall for us…with his help we got all the rubber stamps that led to our package re-design. He has a catalog with hundreds of unusual drawings that can be made into rubber stamps. He also creates custom rubber stamps with your own ink drawings. I love visiting him, he always has the best stories about bar fights, Ireland, and general shenanigans. (In fact… if or when you go, be sure to ask him about the Mercedes that was lost in the woods.)
My Thoughts on Greg La Vardera's "Our Re-Modern Movement - The Tipping Point?"
00/00/0000, 00:00 | FUTURE HOUSE NOWI had always been interested in homes. I always dreamed of something better and more exciting than the standard fare of suburban cul-de-sacs, though I wasn't totally hooked on modern yet. But when I saw this cover, with a real family in a cool-ass house, it was like a lightning bolt. I can't tell you how badly I'd like to live in a Flatpak. It's one of the top three contenders for me. It just fits me and my family so perfectly. When the time finally comes to really build a new home I will be giving them a call to talk.
It's funny though, how "weird" most people think modernist homes are. My mother said "you want to live in a white box?" with a look on her face that was pure disbelief. Talking houses with some neighbors I could detect their nervous smiles when I mentioned concrete and steel, as in "uh, okay, sure, as long as it's not next door to my house." And look at the real estate markets. That's all you need to know. You don't see a lot of developers building modernist spec homes. Just pick up a real estate magazine and thumb through it for a minute. How many cool modernist homes will you find in the listings. Maybe one or two in a hundred page book. And they're mostly really big, expensive houses, probably built in the eighties after watching too many episodes of Miami Vice. Good, simple, modern homes for real families are hard to come by. Your best bet is a fifties ranch. Even those are a minority in the market compared to the grand total of everything else.
But I think Greg is right. This is the right time. Dwell has been so successful that some other similar publications have started to appear. Blogs like mine are popping up like daisies. Sarah Susanka's "Not So Big House" movement has a lot of followers (because it makes a lot of sense). Or consider John Brown's Slow Home Movement. And green is suddenly king. People finally realize that their choices have a real impact. Now is definitely the time of Less is More, and modernism fits that bill perfectly.
Probably the biggest helper in all of this, in my opinion, is going to be the bursting of the real estate bubble. I say that for one simple reason: it will make people change their view as to what their home really is - a home to live in and not an investment to make a fortune off of. I really believe that people won't/can't build what they really want because they are too hung up on resale value and growing massive equity. I don't know if this attitude caused the housing bubble or vice versa, but either way they combine to create an effect where the resultant high cost of housing distorts our views, closes our minds to new ideas, prices lots of people out of the market for a good home, and places too much power in the hands of developers, not in the hands of consumers where it should be. And so, here we are. With the bubble busting and home prices correcting I think we may also see home buyers making very different decisions about what they want to live in. I know this is the case for my wife and I, and I hope, at least, that this is the case for others.
It's definitely time for America to focus its attention on things like better homes, greener communities, reliable energy, even better communications technology, education and health care. These are the things that make up the infrastructure of this country. We won't have to worry about foreign threats for long if we allow ourselves to fall apart from the inside.
This whole country is at a tipping point, or near one. Modern homes are just a tiny, tiny part of that. We can choose a better way to live without giving up all the really great things we already enjoy.
Better living through design. Work smarter, not harder. Find the holistic solutions.
We can do it.

Bernardes + Jacobsen - CF Residence
04/14/2008, 14:17 | Modern Residential Design
Steeling the show - Blessed with a great plot and open brief, a lightweight, transparent, horizontal building, was what the architects Thiago Bernardes and Paulo Jacobsen designed.

Overview & Plot
Located on a plot in the picturesque condominium Portogalo in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Paulo Jacobsen and Thiago Bernardes wanted to accommodate a large family retreat taking full advantage of the plot and its location. The challenge was how to minimise the buildings impact from roadside - difficult with such a large house.
Departing from traditional Brazilian wood or brick structures the house employs steel to span the vast openings that connect all rooms to the views below.

The svelte steel corner pillars provide minimal interruption to the open plan dining and living area of the ground floor. In summertime (almost constant in Angra dos Reis) the glass panels dividing this area up slide away to provide an enormous expanse of shade.
Half way up the faade, and providing elevated viewing to the bedrooms are two outdoor balconies of Peroba wood, these break up the stark white of the lower level and the surrounding steel structure. The wood is also used throughout the second level interior, and as a lining the the vast roof span.

Continuing to the roof level, tropical storms and heavy rain, common in the early part of the year in Rio de Janeiro are caught by large glass overhangs, which still let light through to the bedrooms. The glass also blurs the connection between the roof?s reflecting pool, paved with green ceramic tiles, imitating the colour of the inlet and sea beyond. The same applies to the pool on the terrace, which seems to fall into the sea. This camouflage, and the fact that the house is set into the hillside at the rear, reduces its size, as to the thin steel structures, elongating its horizontal structure. It?s only from below, backstroking in the pool that the house?s true size is revealed.
Layout
With the entire ground floor dedicated to the pool, dining and entertaining, the upper level provides the entrance and 4 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Originally two giant bedrooms, the sets of two our housed either side of the atrium over the pool. As you enter the residence through its large dark wood doors, the bedrooms act as blinkers, focusing the view out to the water beyond.
A small seating area between allows you to contemplate, and perhaps acts as a formal arrival area. From here, ?grand? staircases head both inside (left) to the living room, and outside (right) to the pool area (Bernardes + Jacobsen are renowned for impressive staircases).
The Result
Now complete in a 4 bedroom layout, this family retreat seems to have all one needs for a relaxing weekend. The thin steel structure and stretched horizontal roofline give it the appearance of a lightweight marque or stretched canvas roof. A seaside camp that mirrors the water beyond. Yet, from within, there is no doubt that this house is: permanent; modern and luxurious; and will provide a great weekend spot for years to come.

Trend: The Mobile Taste of the Beijing Games
00/00/0000, 00:00 | CScout TrendBlog
Innovative ways of applying mobile devices give audience worldwide unique perspectives of the event.
Trend Description:
Not being able to launch 3G does not mean this year’s Olympics keeps the hottest mobile media outside China. A bunch of companies are rolling out their mobile applications for the Games, which, if not becoming popular right away, carry profound meanings for world-level events later on.
Cases:
Twitter’s #080808 Campaign
Twitter’s campaign (pronounced tag 080808) is chalking up good result since the opening ceremony on August 8, 2008. Initiated only two days before the opening of the Games, it claims about 5000 entries coming in on the big day and is updated with an average rate of 1 piece every 0.2 seconds. A secret of its success is the easy way to press the keys of “0? and “8? on mobile phones. No matter who are you are and where you are, as long as you think or experience something related to the Olympics, you can tweet a couple of words starting with”#080808?.
Lenovo Olympics 2008 Application
Levono, one of the top sponsors of the Beijing Games and the official PC provider is NOT gonna lag behind those mobile savvy in playing with new technology. It lined up with Zumobi and rolled out the Lenovo Olympic 2008 Application, with which users of microsoft mobile, blackberries and iPhone can follow up the latest sports news, images and comments during the Olympics. It also contains blog posts selected ramdonly from anonymous athletes and is powered by ads of Lenovo and Intel.
Qik:
Located in California, Qik is a video-sharing company that allows Qikkers to stream their mobile captures directly to the website. Users have access to the service when they buy mobile phones installed with the software and will save money if they have signed up for unlimited data plans. Qik is now encouraging its users to send back footages taken on-the-spot of the Games. It will be a great fun for journalists and spectators who use proper telephone plans to point their mobile phones directly to what they are experiencing. Check up the Qikker’s footage of the opening ceremony here.
Trend Potential:
Given the fact that 3G is still to come in China, there is no sweeping success for any mobile application in the Beijing Games so far. However, the experience drawn here and business models initiated will remain good cases for later studies.

MODERN HOLIDAY GREETINGS
00/00/0000, 00:00 | GAILE GUEVARA

$1500 Plans So Long, and thanks for all the fish
00/00/0000, 00:00 | LamiDesign Modern House Plan BlogThe new pricing is part of a marketing agreement we have made with stock house plan vendor Houseplans.com who will now also be distributing our designs. This is part of an effort elevate the level of design offered in the form of stock plans, not only modern houses, but of all styles. This has been a goal of mine since starting this venture, and for the first time in the leadership at Houseplans.com I have found a similar vision. Yes, they offer the usual array of mediocre design, but they are behind this idea and are committed to marketing better designed home plans in a different way - a way in which design is more important than square feet, or bedroom count. The offering that they will assemble will completely out-class the offerings of other vendors and it is my sincere hope that this brings pressure to bear on them to improve their game. The end result, I hope, is the enlightenment of the buying public to better design, the creation of demand for better designed homes, and the inevitable move of the market to fill that demand. End game - better designed homes readily available for everyone, particularly for my camp of modernists.
This really brings the introductory phase of our house plan venture to a close. We now have 8 different designs and 3 variations on one design available in Construction Prints for a total of 11 different plan sets, and another on the way in Design Prints only right now. And there are more great designs on the way. Customers have stepped up to the plate, and if you have been watching our blog you will have seen many houses under construction at all ends of the country. Our house plans have found their way into media, appearing in the New York Times, Dwell, This Old House magazine, soon Metropolitan Home, and numerous blogs covering design online. Our thanks go out to those early adopters and the journalists and bloggers that have covered them. As well as this launch has gone it has been a struggle to create the designs, market them, and maintain the sites to promote them, all while running a local architectural practice to keep our roof above our heads. The new pricing will allow us to dedicate more time to producing more product, so truly good things lie ahead. Thank you for following this adventure with us.

Now M2E is emphasizing the commercial applications for their technology, with a specific goal: revolutionizing cell phone batteries. M2E will announce the development of an external charger later this month that will generate between 300 and 700 percent more energy than current kinetic energy technologies, and may eventually replace cell phone batteries altogether.

This house is now on the market, a perfect home for the sophisticated Vancouverite who appreciates a modern minimalist interior with the influence of west coast materials. To read more about this property visit realtor Jason Soprovich's website.
I love this beautifully executed renovation by Vancouver based design team Peter Cardew Architects. d*s reader recs: chair help?
07/28/2008, 17:00 | Design*Sponge
we haven’t done a reader recommendation on d*s for quite some time and i thought it might be time to bring them back a bit. or at least in this case because i couldn’t resist posting these fab chair frames (so much potential!). d*s reader killorn o’neill bought these great chairs for $5 at a yard sale (i am so, so jealous) and is having a hard time deciding how to redo them in a fabric that is patterned but doesn’t compete with or overshadow the chair back design. killorn would like to paint them white and go with a navy fabric but i thought i’d open it up to you guys and see what you think? if you have a suggestion for killorn’s chairs just leave them (and any links to colors/fabrics) in the comment section below.
why suggestion would actually be for something soft. i’d suggest a benjamin moore color like “abalone”, “grey owl”, “winter white”, or “november rain” for the frame and then a pale yellow and white fabric (with a small-scale pattern) for the seats. but that could be just because i’m crushing on grey and yellow right now (again). but a white frame with a textile like the tan/white version of lena corwin’s field print could be nice, too.
[ps: speaking of print+pattern, bowie at print and pattern is looking for submissions for her new book! click here to check it out and send something in]
